1. Comparison of PICkit 3 and ICD 2

1) For 16-bit chips, the download speed is more than 2 times faster than ICD2.

2) The price is much lower than ICD2, and the supported series are almost as many as ICD2, and will exceed ICD2 in the future.

3) The connectivity is more reliable than ICD2, and ICD2 USB cannot be connected frequently. This is one of the most troublesome problems of ICD2.

pic18 is much more comfortable to debug than pic16, 1 breakpoint is really unpleasant.

The differences are:

1 ) PICKIT3 will be faster. The main chip of PICkit3 is PIC24 , which is slightly faster than Pickit2 , and USB is still Full12M .
2 ) Expand offline download space ( 512Kbytes ) , PICkit 2 ( 128Kbytes )
3 ) Provide a more accurate reference voltage source,
increase the voltage range ( 1.8-5V VDD ; 1.8-14V VPP ), PICkit 2 ( 2.5-5V VDD )

4 ) There are more chip series supported, currently PICKIT3 already supports PIC16F193X and PIC32 . PICKIT2 will not support PIC32 debugging in the future , and PICKIT2's support for some new chips has been in the BETA state, such as PIC18F14K50.

5) PICKIT3, there are 4 self-recovery fuses, PK2 does not have a single fuse, it is almost unprotected bare metal.
